Project Overview
Building Trust in Gaming eCommerce Through Verified Customer Reviews
Summary
JoyMate is an eCommerce mobile application designed to help gamers purchase gaming and streaming equipment with confidence. The defining focus of this project is trust—specifically ensuring that all customer reviews are written only by users who have actually purchased the product. The project explores how UX design can reduce fake or misleading reviews by enforcing purchase-verified feedback, while still delivering a fast, intuitive checkout experience suitable for gamers who value efficiency and reliability.
The Problem
Gamers rely heavily on reviews when purchasing gaming equipment, yet many eCommerce platforms allow reviews from users who have never purchased the product. This creates mistrust, poor purchasing decisions, and frustration—especially for users investing in performance-critical hardware.
Users face challenges such as:
• Inability to trust whether reviews reflect real product usage
• Difficulty evaluating product quality accurately
• Time wasted sorting through unreliable or fake feedback
• Checkout flows that feel slow or unnecessarily complex
These issues reduce confidence and negatively impact the overall shopping experience.
Goals & Success Criteria
JoyMate was designed to restore trust in gaming eCommerce by ensuring that every review comes from a verified purchaser. The experience needed to balance credibility, clarity, and speed, without overwhelming users.
The primary goals were to:
• Ensure all customer reviews are submitted only after purchase
• Help users make confident decisions based on real user experiences
• Present product information and reviews clearly
• Maintain a smooth, fast checkout process
Success was measured by users’ ability to trust reviews, evaluate products confidently, and complete purchases without friction.
Research & Insights
To understand how gamers evaluate products and perceive trust, I conducted qualitative research through interviews and surveys. The research focused on shopping behavior, reliance on reviews, and frustrations with existing eCommerce platforms.
Key Insights
• Users strongly distrust reviews that are not purchase-verified
• Gamers prefer fewer but more credible reviews over large volumes
• Time-consuming purchasing flows reduce engagement
• Transparent pricing and clear review sources increase confidence
These insights shaped JoyMate’s review system and overall information hierarchy.
User Personas
Two personas were created to represent different but overlapping trust-related needs in gaming eCommerce. Both personas emphasize the importance of verified reviews when making purchasing decisions.
Mike
Mike is a hardcore gamer and technology enthusiast who depends on authentic customer feedback before investing in gaming equipment. He values detailed specifications but trusts real user reviews more than marketing descriptions.
Amanda
Amanda is a professional gamer and streamer who needs reliable equipment and cannot afford poor purchasing decisions. Verified reviews and dependable delivery help her choose products quickly without compromising quality.
User Flow
To support trust-driven purchasing, I mapped the core user flow from product discovery to post-purchase review submission. This ensured that review creation is logically and securely tied to completed purchases.
The primary flow focused on:
• Browsing and evaluating products
• Reviewing purchase-verified customer feedback
• Completing checkout efficiently
• Submitting reviews only after purchase
Wireframes
Low-fidelity wireframes were created to explore how product information and reviews could be displayed clearly without overwhelming users. Early iterations emphasized review credibility and content hierarchy.
The wireframes focused on:
• Clear separation between product details and reviews
• Visual indicators for verified-purchase reviews
• Simple navigation and checkout flow
Visual Design & UI System
After validating usability through wireframes, I developed a visual system that reinforces clarity and trust. The interface minimizes distractions and keeps attention on product credibility.
The design system includes:
• Typography optimized for readability of reviews
• Teal-based color palette to convey creativity and reliability
• Consistent UI components across product and review screens
• Clear visual cues for verified reviews
Final Design Solution
The final high-fidelity design delivers a trust-first eCommerce experience where users can confidently rely on customer feedback.
Key Features
• Purchase-verified customer reviews only
• Clear product specifications and descriptions
• Fast and intuitive checkout experience
• Clean UI that emphasizes credibility over noise
Usability Testing & Iteration
An unmoderated usability study was conducted to evaluate how verified reviews influence purchasing behavior. The study focused on trust perception, clarity, and review usability.
Based on testing feedback:
• Review credibility indicators were refined
• Consideration for review sorting was identified
• Minor layout and interaction improvements were applied
These iterations strengthened user confidence and reduced hesitation before purchase.
Outcomes & Learnings
Outcomes
• Increased trust in customer reviews
• Clearer product evaluation process
• Reduced reliance on misleading or fake feedback
Learnings
• Trust is a primary conversion driver in gaming eCommerce
• Verified reviews significantly impact purchase confidence
• UX decisions can actively prevent misuse, not just improve usability
This project highlighted how design can enforce credibility, not just aesthetics.
Next Steps
If JoyMate were to continue evolving, future improvements would include:
• Advanced filtering for verified reviews
• Reviewer reputation indicators
• Expanded post-purchase engagement features
